Richard avedon (1923-2004) was an extraordinary portrait/fashion photographer from New York City. Most of his photos were black and white and many used dramatic lighting. An obituary published in The New York Times stated that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century".
